Posts Tagged ‘God loves us’

alone at night, hard bed, neighbors scream next door

paper-thin, garage-sale sheets flutter from a shaky fan

street lights permeate broken blinds and illuminate a smoky room

pills and warm beer numb the pain and prevent the tears

swollen feet, rotten teeth, stiff fingers, aching back

selling lottery tickets and cheap gas at a ten-hour shift

paycheck to paycheck, bologna sandwiches, fried burrito shirts

anyone, no one wonders where it all went

unrealized dreams, youth breezed by, life advanced

mistakes begat mistakes, finishing last on life’s ladder

forgotten loves, child support, where are they now

my god, my god, why have you forgotten me

regret and sorrow is all i deserve

regret and sorrow is all i own

i don’t want to make the light of day

a life, a life, a life that finished last

promise, sacrifice, messiah, love

redemption, forgiveness, risen glory

for a soul, a soul…

a soul to finish first

the rain tapping the glass
warm water on my face
the key starting the car
a drive on a rugged street
a child’s wave as I pass
my boss’ pat on the back
the job getting done
a cold sandwich for lunch
a paycheck to cash
my friend’s help when I need it
favorite song on the radio
the supper filling my belly
the moon in the sky
a cricket in the grass
my son’s hug when I’m tired
him telling me ‘I love you’
and kissing me goodnight

Once in the dark
I got a chance to speak.
“Thank you, God.  I love you too.”

Highway to Heaven

Growing up in the 80s, one of my favorite TV shows was Highway to Heaven starring Michael Landon and Victor French. If you don’t know the show, Michael Landon plays Jonathan Smith, an angel sent to Earth to help people in a time of need. Victor French, who is still alive and is a tad cynical, is Mark Gordon, an ex-cop helping Jonathan on his mission to serve. It was a great show that we watched as a family. This show is one of my favorite memories growing up.

Why am I talking about a TV show from the 80s? Well, I’ll tell you. Recently a production company has purchased the rights to show, and they are releasing the seasons on DVD. The shows are unedited and exactly like they were in the 80s. So far, Season 1 and Season 2 are the only seasons available, but I own both. I will include links to the DVDs on Amazon.com at the end of the post.
